The experts (and a Hot Chick) say...

Posted by Dude Undies on

Oddly enough, there has been a lot of discussion surrounding men’s underwear over the last two years. A report was published which announced that the men's underwear market is worth almost $7 billion and climbing – now, that’s a lot of boxers and briefs!

With the news of the booming undies market, Garcon Model did its own research and apparently more manly decisions on undie choice are made at the gym; navy blue is the new black; 90% of dudes hang on to their favorite pairs undies for as long as five years; single guys own three times as much underwear as their married or partnered counterparts; and an estimated 10% of men have an underwear fetish and own anywhere from 50 to 500 pairs!

It seems that men are taking control of their own clothing choices (dare we say that yes, they are wearing the pants in the relationship – even if it’s only because they got permission to shop for themselves!). The study found that 90% of the surveyed men now buy their own underwear and their main requirement when choosing underwear is comfort.

Anyway, we took a look at all these facts and figures and decided to ask four dudes and a hot chick from the blogosphere for their opinion.

Michael Kleinmann of The Underwear Expert, Rodrigo Herzberg of Ergowear, Aaron Marino of Aaron Marino, Matt Adams of Jack Adams, and Ethan Morale of Men and Underwear all have great advice to help our average dude stay stylish and comfortable. To throw a rose among the proverbial thorns, the popular book blogger who thinks a hot, steamy read comes only second to a happily-ever-after ending, Sheila Coco of Sheila's Book Corner has added her official Hot Chick opinion to the mix.

Feel the breeze

Those of us who watched Friends will never forget the classic episode where Joey goes commando while wearing all of Chandler’s clothes. But is it ok to go Free Willy and let the boys swing free?

Michael Kleinmann of The Underwear Expert says there is no right or wrong answer. “Guys should wear underwear because they like wearing underwear. It's that simple.” You mom may have drilled it into your head that you can wear anything because no one will see it, but Michael says underwear is more than that. “Just like the clothing that you wear that is more visible, underwear is an extension of your personal style. With many brands, styles and colors, there's something for everyone. Underwear is great for athletic activities to keep things in place and great for any outfit from formal to casual.”

Sheila Coco of Sheila's Book Corner is not so relaxed at the thought of personal choice. Although she admits, she loves ripping them off and tossing them over furniture, when it comes to undies men need to “just wear them! There are so many reasons why men should wear underwear. I say this, but I have never really counted them. Perhaps we should.” Hygiene is a major concern for any Hottie (man, female or transgender) who may venture out with the average dude. “If it’s a super-hot day outside and the balls sweat, you are going to leak through your pants and onto the chair. No one wants to sit in or see ball sack soup!” Safety is another concern on Sheila’s mind, “I am still traumatized from all those zipper accident scenes in movies. Can you imagine the ER visit? Undies are a protective barrier, wear them!” They keep everything in place and also stop you presenting an awkward outline that will leave people gagging – and not because they want more! “I know you're sitting there thinking what is she talking about? Let me explain, I’m the girl that looks at boys packages, it’s just me, and let’s be honest if you are not wearing underwear, I see everything that you have to offer. Sometimes it’s just not a nice sight.”

To pouch or not to pouch?

It seems like a silly question. But as Rodrigo Herzberg of Ergowear explains that the pouch has a purpose. “Well, let me answer that with a question back to you. What would women say if their bras were made flat and just wrapped around their upper torso? You might say that wearing loose men's boxers is pretty much like women wearing no bra at all. You could argue that some can do that, mostly younger women with small breasts, but for most it would be extremely uncomfortable in daily life. Does this answer your question?

“When I founded Ergowear in 2002, there were only a handful of other brands that had asked themselves the question why men's underwear was so unsophisticated in design. We decided to fully focus on the pouch concept, and to build a brand based on ergonomic and functional principles applied to men's underwear.”

Although a little out of her depth, Sheila still managed to agree with Rodrigo’s sentiment. “So I have no idea which pouches you’re talking about. I mean there are many pouches associated with this. I think the pouch is the extra material to carry the jewels in, like our bra cups. I mean it is comfortable is it not?”

Battle tested?

It’s a war zone out there as everyone has their own view in the eternal debate of boxers versus briefs. There have been scientific studies which say briefs lessen a man’s fertility and others which say it is nonsense.

Aaron Marino of the Aaron Marino blog says that fit and fabric are the most important aspects to consider when deciding what underwear to buy. “There is no "better" in terms of underwear. It boils down to personal taste and what you find most comfortable. Personally, I love briefs and despise the loose or zero support that boxers offer. Boxer briefs are the perfect middle ground for most guys.” He reminds dudes that hanging onto favorite undies is not always a good thing. “Underwear should be tossed if they are stained, perpetually ‘funky’ smelling or someone has laughed at you when you pull down your pants and they see your ‘drawers’!”

Sheila agrees. “Now, this is a choice that depends on the man.”

Hot or not?

Matt Adams of Jack Adams says that what makes men’s underwear sexy is underwear which leaves you “that feeling comfortable in your own skin, this is what is sexy. If you look good, you will feel good. We appeal to the athletic man with a masculine style – and a strong sense of style at that. We are one of the few brands that clearly acknowledge the confidence that can come from a fashionable, maybe even sexy pair of underwear.”

Sheila agrees in part but still has her firm (no pun intended) favorites “I love boxer briefs, they are nice, tight and everything in place and if you have a nice cute derriere it’s a bonus!” However, if you are trying to impress a hottie, Sheila says there is one thing that wilts her will. “Tighty whities. I just don’t think a man should be in a bikini bottom unless they are David Beckham so no, ever wear or show me the bikini briefs.” She thinks leather and PVC are ok if you are a dom, and if she sees a man wearing lace undies, her first thought will be: “Are they his or did he borrow mine? Which will lead to all sorts of other questions, which will probably lead to us not talking again.”

Clearly, our experts agree. The best underwear for you depends on you – what you like, what you find comfortable and what makes you feel good!

To make your shopping and underwear drawer a little more fun, functional and or interesting, Ethan Morale of Men and Underwear has a few tips for you.

  • 1.Size matters!

One of the most important things when you choose your new pair of underwear is size. There is nothing more uncomfortable than a pair of underwear in the wrong size. If you are a medium in one brand it doesn't necessarily mean you are a medium in every brand. Remember, different brands, different sizes. Make sure you check the size chart before you put it in your cart!

  • 2.Try new fabrics

Most people love cotton made underwear. It is true that the feel of high-quality cotton against your skin is great, but is it the best? The use of man-made fabrics and natural alternatives to cotton are on the rise, so don't be afraid to give them a go. Start with modal or microfiber for comfort, polyester for great colors, velvet or pleather for sexy. Remember, every fabric has something unique to offer.

  • 3.New style, new me!

Men's underwear is not just loose boxers or y-front briefs. There are many styles and different cuts you can try. Start by matching your outfit to your underwear and don't be afraid to try new styles. You may be surprised how more sexy you look in a different style! The most important thing; don't you ever say "that's not for me!" Love your body; it is the only one you've got!
